Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Outcomes in a Mature Trauma System

Serious neurotrauma, including spinal cord injury (SCI) and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have lifelong impacts and profound societal costs.  In Australia, the lifetime costs for severe TBI and SCI have been estimated at $4.8 to $9.5 million per incident case, highlighting the need for high quality acute care and rehabilitation.  The State of Victoria, Australia has been operating an inclusive, regionalised trauma system since the early 2000s with routine monitoring of care and outcomes, including long-term patient-reported outcomes, undertaken using the Victorian State Trauma Registry.  In this presentation, the management of severe TBI and SCI in the trauma system, and the outcomes of these cases will be presented relative to other major trauma cases.  The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patient care pathways and discharge destinations will also be presented.
