Natasha Husband

In December 2018, 22-year-old Natasha was involved in a serious car accident while driving near her home in rural Marlborough. She lost control of the vehicle in a 100 km/h zone, resulting in a side-on collision with a concrete power pole.

She was airlifted to Wellington Regional Hospital, where she spent 8 days in the Intensive Care Unit. The accident caused multiple traumatic injuries including fractures to many ribs, left radius and ulna, cervical and lumbar spine, sacrum and pelvis, and a Lisfranc foot injury consisting of multiple metatarsal fractures and subluxations.

Additional injuries included a moderate liver laceration, lung contusions and haemopneumothorax, scalp laceration and cerebral haemorrhages in the corpus callosum and frontal lobe, resulting in a bilateral 4th CN palsy.

After her time in the ICU, Natasha spent several weeks in the medical and surgical wards of Wellington Regional Hospital, where she passed a full Westmead PTA assessment after 22 days. She was discharged home after 6 weeks of treatment at ABI Rehabilitation.

Nearly 6 years later, Natasha's recovery is considered nothing short of a miracle. Although she still experiences some long-term complications from her brain injury, she has learned to accommodate the effects of her injuries and embraces the life she has now.
