Māori Experiences of Rehabilitation from Major Trauma

Whānau Māori are over-represented in major trauma injury, with an incidence of major trauma that is 30 percent higher than in non-Māori 1. Despite this, little research has explored the experiences of Māori in major trauma care.   This work explores the experience of whānau Māori for major trauma rehabilitation, in their own words.  This project adopted a patient/whānau experience approach. This presentation will therefore focus on the methodology used for the project and discuss the themes of the kōrero so far.  Early analysis has identified the importance of communication, mental health wellbeing, value of whānau support, Whakawhanaungatanga and building trusting relationships. Through gaining insight into their collective kōrero within a kaupapa Māori context, findings will inform areas for quality improvement across the trauma care pathway, to support beneficial, wellbeing outcomes for  Māori major trauma patients and their whānau.
